The opening ceremony of the 17th Biennial Delegates Congress, of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) at Dodowa on Tuesday, was abruptly truncated due to the inability of the keynote Speaker, Mrs. Samira Bawumia to continue with her address.

After the opening addresses and a welcome address by the Chief Nursing Officer for Greater Accra, Cecilia Obeng Peprah, it was the turn of the wife of Ghana’s Vice President, Mrs. Bawumia who had been sitting since the beginning of the programme to deliver her keynote address.

Around 12 midday, Mrs. Bawumia  mounted the dais to deliver her address, only for her to request for water.

After drinking the water, she complained of dizziness and was seen going down.

Her aides and security details rushed to hold her and administered the necessary first aid whilst the perimeter was cordoned off.

A stretcher was quickly drawn from one of the vehicles in the Second Lady’s convoy.

Mrs. Bawumia was conveyed to one of the vehicles before the convoy moved out of the hotel.

The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mrs. Elizabeth Sackey, delegates and invited guests had to disperse.

Later in a tweeted message, Mrs. Bawumia expressed appreciation to professionals who helped her.

“I am grateful to the professionals present, for their timely intervention after I succumbed to the heat at the conference venue. Thank you all for the well-wishes.”

The GRNMA congress, which is being held at the Forest Hotel at Dodowa in Greater Accra, from November 25 to 29, 2019, is to take major decisions to address challenges facing the profession and quality care delivery.

The GRNMA, founded in March 1960, is a professional association of Ghanaian nurses and midwives enrolled by the Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana
