Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was Arsenal’s hero in the FA Cup final – but not everything went right for the striker at Wembley.
The Gunners’ captain was preparing to lift the trophy after scoring twice to seal a 2-1 win over Chelsea when he managed to drop it in front of his amused teammates.
With social distancing measures in place, there was no one to present the cup to Aubameyang, who had to collect it from a plinth.
That is where the trouble began as he first struggled to lift it. He finally managed to do so but then as he awkwardly carried it to prepare for the trophy lift, disaster struck as it slipped from his grasp.
His teammates saw the funny side, though, as they burst out laughing at the forward’s blunder.
Manager Mikel Arteta joked: “He needs more experience with trophies. We can get him used to that.”
Aubameyang had been the star of the show at an empty Wembley, as Arsenal came from behind to win against the Blues.
Christian Pulisic had put Chelsea ahead with just six minutes on the clock.
But Aubameyang got his side back on level terms from the penalty spot after he was fouled in the box and then struck a second half winner to follow up his semi-final heroics.
Aubameyang’s outstanding performance further highlights his importance to the club, who are attempting to nail him down to a new contract.
The former Borussia Dortmund ace is in the final 12 months of his contract and was giving nothing away when asked about his future following the final.
Asked if he could tell fans anything about his future, he replied: “Nothing. Just today and the trophy. That’s it.
“I am not thinking about this. I just want to enjoy it with the guys and take the trophy now.”
