Ballon d’Or Winner Should Not Only Be Based On Goals -Jorginho

Jorginho, a Chelsea and Italy midfielder, believes the Ballon d’Or award for the best player in the world should be based on more than simply individual goals.

In May, the 29-year-old midfielder won the Champions League, and in July, he won Euro 2020, playing a key role in both continental victories.

All but one of the last 12 Ballon d’Ors have gone to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with Luka Modric the lone exception in 2018, but Jorginho believes the award should not be only dependent on goal-scoring ability.

The playmaker, who won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award in August, was mentioned as one of the favorites for this year’s award, alongside Robert Lewandowski, Mo Salah, and Lionel Messi.

‘It’s not up to me to say if I should win the Ballon d’Or, but it would be an incentive for other players to prove that it’s not just about goals,’ he told Brazilian source GloboEsporte, according to The Mirror.

‘I don’t want to set unrealistic expectations, but I’d be lying if I claimed I didn’t think about it.’

‘It’ll be great if it occurs, but I won’t be upset if it doesn’t.’ I keep my feet on the ground and concentrate on other things; I’ve already been named UEFA’s best player of the year.

The Italy international, who has 40 caps for his country since making his debut in 2016, explained why he chose the Azzurri over his native Brazil.

‘They tried to persuade me, but in the end, I selected Italy because I would have been ungrateful otherwise,’ he said.

‘Winning the World Cup would be fantastic. The Champions League and the Euros are not to be overlooked, but the World Cup is unrivaled. We won’t be the favorites in Qatar, but we won the Euros, so we can’t go ignored.’

Italy and Switzerland are tied on points in Group C heading into their final two World Cup qualifiers, with the top two meeting in Rome on Friday night.
