Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar is expected to fight for votes in his first Ballon d’Or award, according to French daily L’Equipe, with five players picked ahead of him.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the famous Ballon d’Or awards were canceled in 2020, but will return to Paris this winter on November 29 at the Theatre du Chatelet.
However, the publication does not expect one of Paris’s Brazilian stars to win the individual award, instead naming Jorginho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski, and Lionel Messi as the five candidates.
According to the newspaper, Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City, as well as England’s Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane, could all push Neymar ‘far enough in the standings.’
With Messi winning the Copa America, Jorginho lifting the Champions League with Chelsea and the Euros with Italy, Benzema and Lewandowski jockeying for the greatest No 9 in the world, and Ronaldo leaving Juventus as the top scorer in Italy, the quintet decorated L’Equipe’s front cover on Tuesday morning.
L’Equipe cut it down even more by naming Messi, who is now with PSG, Benzema, and Lewandowski as the most likely trio.
