This was disclosed by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Yahaya Faruk on Thursday at the headquarters of the Nigerian Army in Abuja. This he revealed when the Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Alexey Shebarshinpaid a court
In a report released by the Nigerian Army through it’s spokesman, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, the COAS reiterated the need for the Nigerian military and Russia to use their existing mutual relationship to their advantage.
According to the statement: “Reminiscing the long existing relationship between the NA and the Russia, the COAS expressed the need to rekindle the relationship for their mutual benefit. He also solicited the support of the Russian government in the provision of sophisticated equipment to shore up NA’s combat efficiency in the fight against terrorism, insurgency and other sundry crimes orchestrating insecurity in some parts of the country”.
The COAS pleaded with the Russian government to provided special ammunition to aid the Nigerian Army in the fight against terrorism in the country. He assured the Ambassador of NA’s determination in sustaining the cooperation.
Ambassador Alexey Shebarshin however commended the Nigerian Army for its contributions towards the stability of the African continent in terms of military capability, trade and investment. He also promised Russia’ support to the Nigerian Army the provision of military equipment and assistance.
