PSG loses for the first time to Rennes.

Paris Saint-Germain had enjoyed an ideal start to the Ligue 1 season in 2021/22, winning eight of their first eight games. The star-studded squad, however, surrendered their first points of the domestic season on Sunday lunchtime when they were defeated 2-0 by Rennes.

Rennes won thanks to two goals each side of halftime, with Gaetan Laborde converting a fantastic Kamaldeen Sulemana cross at the end of the first half and Flavien Tait adding a second shortly after the restart.

During the first half, both Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe had chances, with the former setting up the latter for a golden chance halfway through the half that the Frenchman missed. PSG were furious to be behind at halftime when a Messi freekick hit the crossbar.

They weren’t able to channel their displeasure in the correct way, and they conceded again just as the second half began.

PSG had a mountain to climb, and they believed they’d cut the deficit in half when Mbappe scored in the 67th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to the Frenchman’s offside earlier in the move.

PSG also benefited from VAR, which overturned a penalty awarded to Rennes for a challenge on Laborde by Achraf Hakimi. No spot kick was given because the full-back got to the ball first.

Rennes didn’t mind because they were able to cling on for a 2-0 win, sending PSG back to Paris with their first loss of the season.
