Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has asked the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to ensure that all illegal firearms are recovered from civilians.
He stated unequivocally that numerous illegal guns have found their way into communities, emphasizing that no weaponry should fall into the wrong hands in order to preserve full peace in the country.
When the IGP paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi last Wednesday, the Asantehene reminded him, “It is your obligation to protect lives and assets in this country.”
Dr. Dampare was accompanied by senior police officers, including Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Director-General in Charge of Administration; COP Mr Nathan Kofi Boakye, Director-General in Charge of Legal and Prosecution; and COP Mr Isaac Ken Yeboah, Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
The Asantehene told the IGP that he (the IGP) had been tasked with doing everything in his power to keep crime to a bare minimum, and that he could not afford to let the country down.
