Manchester United may have a number of issues, but thanks to a 2-0 win away at Villarreal in one of Tuesday’s early kick-offs, they will be in the knockout stages of the 2021/22 Champions League. Michael Carrick earned a win in his debut game as interim coach thanks to late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
Apart from Ronaldo’s and Dani Parejo’s squandered freekicks, there weren’t many opportunities in the first half of this game.
David de Gea made a fantastic stop from Manu Trigueros early in the second half, while Arnaut Danjuma also missed the target.
Manchester United, on the other hand, finished strongly and were the better team in the final 20 minutes, with Sancho putting pressure on Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.
Rulli next attempted to play a ball out from the back, but fine work from Fred resulted in a lost ball, which Ronaldo was able to pick up and chip the Argentine goalkeeper for the game’s first goal in the 78th minute.
After another Rulli save from Marcus Rashford, the Villarreal goalkeeper couldn’t stop a Sancho blast into the top corner in the 90th minute. Fred did an excellent job of regaining possession of the ball, allowing Manchester United to secure the three points on the break.
