Facebook owns all three services, which could not be accessed on the web or through smartphone apps.
With 10.6 million trouble complaints from around the world, Downdetector, a company that tracks outages, said it was the greatest failure it had ever seen.
Users were able to access the sites about 22:00 GMT after the services went down around 16:00 GMT.
Facebook said in a statement on Tuesday that the improper configuration modification impacted the company’s internal tools and processes, complicating efforts to remedy the issue.
“No evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this disruption,” the company claimed.
Facebook apologized to individuals who were impacted by the outage in a tweet sent out on Monday.
